What is it?

Kawasaki disease, also called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, is a form of vasculitis: a disease that causes inflammation of the walls of small and medium-sized arteries throughout the body. These arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The disease is rare and usually affects children under 5 years of age.

What are its symptoms?

High fever that does not go down with antibiotics or antipyretics.

Red eyes without discharge.

Changes in the extremities, swollen and/or colored hands and feet.

Ícono Manos

Skin changes, red outbreaks without vesicles or blisters. Irritability, restlessness, abdominal pain, diarrhea.

Mouth changes. Red, cracked lips, red tongue, no ulcers.

Lump in the neck (swollen neck lymph node).

How to treat it?

All children should be admitted to the hospital to receive gamma globulin through a vein and aspirin orally.

If your child has a fever and any of the symptoms mentioned above, consult your doctor.

If your child has Kawasaki disease and experiences the same symptoms and/or chest or abdominal pain again, consult your doctor immediately or go to the nearest children’s hospital.
