During the first fortnight of the disease, children show fever and other symptoms that later disappear. However, when left untreated, Kawasaki disease can cause: inflammation of the heart’s muscle, which can result in a disruption of the pumping of blood from the heart; or afflict the coronary arteries (the ones carrying blood to the cardiac muscle) which can lead to dilated arteries (aneurysms) or the obstruction of blood flow to the muscle (infarct).
It is not a contagious disease among people, and the possibility of relapse is low (less than 1%).
It cannot be prevented. Due to its origin being unknown, there are no vaccines. Nevertheless, lesions to the heart can be avoided with a correct diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.
